We recommend using Handin for group assignments in Aula, as it includes built-in support for group submissions. However, Handin does not provide plagiarism or similarity checking. If similarity checking is required, Turnitin may be a more suitable option.
Although Turnitin does not support group assignments natively, this can be achieved using one of the workarounds explained in this article.
Workaround 1
A simple workaround is to use a Turnitin assignment with Similarity reports disabled. Each student submits the same group file individually, which also makes it easier to export grades to your university's Record System.
To do this:
Go to your Space and open the Assignments tile.
Select the Turnitin assignment you want to edit.
Click Open in Turnitin (this will take you to Turnitin).
Click Settings.
Open Optional Settings.
Under Similarity Report, disable Allow students to view Similarity Reports.
Click Submit to save the changes.
Workaround 2
If plagiarism checks are required, you can use the following workaround:
- In the Groups tile, create a Group set containing the relevant student groups.
- Export the list of participants in the Group set, as explained here.
- Create a Turnitin assignment with plagiarism checking enabled.
- Ask only one student per group to submit to the Turnitin assignment.
- Once grading is complete, update the downloaded spreadsheet by adding the relevant grades for each group in a new column.
- Create a Manual Assignment in the Student Success App and import the file.
- Import the resulting file into a Manual Assignment in Aula.
Optional: If enabled for your institution and required, export the grades to your university’s Record System.
