Rubrics help to evaluate students' coursework based on predefined criteria and scales. They help students understand what is expected of their assignments and why they have received a particular grade. There are three types of rubrics you can create: Standard, Custom, and Qualitative.
Create a Rubric
Once the Turnitin assignment is created, follow these steps to create and add rubrics to it:
- Head to Journey > Assignments.
- Enter the Turnitin assignment you are working on.
- Click the Open in Turnitin button in the top right corner.
- After being taken to the Turnitin page, click on the cog icon in the top right corner.
- Tap on Optional Settings to reveal advanced options.
- Select the Attach a rubric checkbox.
- Click Launch Rubric Manager and you will be taken to a new page.
- Click on the 3 lines icon on the top left corner and select Create new rubric.
You can create 3 types of rubrics. You can find further details of the rubrics on Turnitin's help center.
- Standard: Used for numerical scoring.
- Custom: Any point value and written feedback can be allocated to each rubric cell.
- Qualitative: Used for providing feedback with no numerical scoring.
Attach a Rubric to an Assignment
Once your rubric is created, you can attach it to an existing assignment.
- Head to Journey > Assignments.
- Enter the Turnitin assignment you are working on.
- Click the Open in Turnitin button in the top right corner.
- After being taken to the Turnitin page, click on the cog icon in the top right corner.
- Tap on Optional Settings to reveal advanced options.
- Select the Attach a rubric checkbox.
- Click on the drop-down and select the corresponding rubric.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit to save the changes.
Import a Rubric
It is possible to import a rubric with a .rbc format or an Excel file with certain information. Word files cannot be imported.
In order to do this, enter the Turnitin page and follow these steps:
- Click on the cog icon in the top right corner.
- Tap on Optional Settings to reveal advanced options.
- Select the Attach a rubric checkbox.
- Click Launch Rubric Manager and you will be taken to a new page.
- Click on the icon in the top right corner and select Import.
- Click Select files and then Open.
- Once the import is completed, click View and the rubric will appear in the Rubric Manager.

Note
- If you are trying to import a rubric, use the download the template option. The template helps you input your criteria and maintain the format. It makes the process of importing Rubric easier to the space.
- You won't see the same rubrics on your drop-down menu as your colleagues. However, you can access their rubrics, download them, and attach them to your own assignments.
