This article details how to create and update assignments, share them with students, and add feedback.

Create an Assignment
- Head to the Journey section and choose the Assignments tab.
- Click on New assignment in the top right corner.
- Select Turnitin from the dropdown.
- Input Choose a title, description, open date, due date, grades release date, and whether you want the assignment hidden from students or not.
If you checked Assignment is hidden when setting up your assignment, you will then need to manually reveal the assignment to students with the following steps:
- Head to Journey > Assignments.
- Locate your assignment and click on the 3 dots to the right of the title.
- Select Show assignment from the menu that will appear.
Edit an Assignment
- Locate your assignment and click on the three dots symbol in the top right corner.
- Choose Edit.
Before clicking on Edit, you will also see the options to Hide or Unhide an assignment, Export grades, and Delete the assignment.
Students can access all assignments visible to them directly through the Assignments tab in the Journey section of Aula. If you'd like, you can also use an Assignment block to embed a preview of the assignment directly within a Post or a page in the Materials section. Head here to learn more: Assignment blocks.
There is a number of advanced settings that can be accessed from the Turnitin platform rather than from Aula. For example, you can choose to allow for late submissions, let students resubmit until the assignment closes, or add a rubric.
Here's how to access those settings:
- Head to the Journey tab and choose Assignments.
- Locate your assignment and click on it to access the Submissions list.
- On the next page, click on Open in Turnitin in the top right.
- After being taken to Turnitin, click on the cog icon in the top right corner.
- Tap on Optional Settings to reveal advanced options.

There are two ways of adding feedback in the Turnitin Feedback Studio:
- You can type in your feedback directly in the comment area under the Edit Text banner, or
- You can attach a link to an external source with your feedback, such as a Google document. To do this, click on the hyperlink icon (the two interlinking circles) below the Edit Text banner.
- In Turnitin, it's only possible to upload one file. This means that for multipart assignments students will need to merge all content into one document.
- If the assignment requires students to upload various file formats, it might be a good idea to create multiple Turnitin assignments. Alternatively, you can create an assignment in Handin which will allow students to upload numerous files and file types.
Turnitin is a third party tool integrated with Aula. If you are having trouble with a Turnitin assignment after being redirected to Turnitin, we'd recommend contacting the IT team at your university, or reviewing Turnitin's support centre.
