You may create sub-assignments that will only be visible to a chosen group of students. This feature can be particularly useful in two situations:
- Granting assignment extensions to a specific student or group of students, with a new deadline reflected in the platform.
- Creating different variations of the same assignment for different sub-groups of students.
- Add a New Extension to an Assignment
- Convert an Existing Assignment into an Extension
- Anonymous Assignment Extensions

Add a New Extension to an Assignment
To set up an assignment extension, follow these steps:
Navigate to your Space and click the Assignments tile.
Open the assignment you want to create an extension for.
Click New extension in the top-right corner. A pop-up will appear.
Enter a name for the extension and select the students to include.
Click Next, then add the following details: Description, Open date, Due date, and Grade release date.
(Optional) Enable Hide this extension if you don’t want students to see it.
Click Create extension to save your changes.
You can then edit the assignment extension as explained in this article.
Possible Errors
If a student selected for the extension has already submitted work to the original assignment, you’ll need to either remove their submission or deselect the student. You can only create an extension once the student no longer has a submission for the original assignment.
Note
Once you’ve created an assignment extension, do not hide the parent assignment from students. If the parent assignment is hidden, students in the extension may experience access issues and may be unable to load the Assignments page.
Convert an Existing Assignment into an Extension of Another Assignment
This option can only be used to convert between assignments created using the same tool (for example, two Handin assignments or two Turnitin assignments).
To convert an extension to a different parent assignment:
Navigate to your Space and click the Assignments tile.
Open the assignment you want to work with.
Click the two arrows icon (⇄) next to New extension.
In the pop-up, enter a name for the extension, select the new parent assignment, and choose the students to include.
Click Convert to save your changes.
Possible Errors
- If a chosen student has submissions in both parent and child assignments, you will need to navigate to either of these assignments and remove one of this student's submissions. Alternatively, you can deselect the student. Only then will you be able to convert an existing assignment into its extension.
- If you are trying to convert an assignment into an extension of another assignment but can't find it in the Destination assignment drop-down, it is likely that those assignments have been created using two different tools. It's only possible to convert an assignment into an extension of another assignment if they were both created within the same app (Either in Handin or in Turnitin).
Anonymous Assignment Extensions
You can create extensions for anonymous assignments, but there are two limitations:
You cannot create an extension if the anonymous assignment already has submissions.
Once an extension is created, you cannot anonymise or de-anonymise the assignment.
FAQs
Q: I can’t find the option to create an extension for a group or anonymous assignment. Why?
A: Extensions are not currently available for group assignments, and may also be unavailable for some anonymous assignments (depending on how the assignment is set up).
Q: Can I move a student to an extension if they have already submitted their work (whether graded or not)?
A: Yes. Regardless of whether the submission has been graded, you can move a student to an extension after deleting their original submission.
Handin: You can delete a submission directly from the Submissions list in Aula.
Turnitin: You can remove a submission by opening Turnitin’s Assignment Inbox. For more details on Turnitin submissions and deletions, refer to Turnitin’s help article on Paper Deletions.
