Aula supports copying and pasting content from Microsoft Word into Aula, and retains the original formatting from the Word document.
Overview
To copy content from Microsoft Word and paste it into Aula while keeping most formatting, follow these steps:
Copy the content from Microsoft Word by right-clicking and selecting Copy, or using the keyboard shortcut.
In Aula, navigate to where you want to paste the content (make sure you have editing rights).
Right-click and select Paste, or use the keyboard shortcut.
Most of the formatting from Microsoft Word will be retained when you paste into Aula.
The following formatting is retained when you copy and paste from Microsoft Word:
Headings (1–3)
Bold
Italics
Quotes
Inline hyperlinks
Paragraph line breaks
Lists (single level)
Font colours
Block links
Image placeholders (images may need to be re-added)
Note
This functionality only applies when copying and pasting from the Microsoft Word app into Aula. Formatting may not be retained when pasting from Google Docs or other shared document tools.
This also applies when you cut and paste.
FAQs
1- Why can’t I copy and paste content from Word Online and retain formatting in Aula?
Word Online formats content differently from the desktop Word app, which can make it harder for Aula to detect and preserve certain formatting.
We recommend downloading your Word Online document and opening it in the installed Microsoft Word app before copying and pasting it into Aula. This converts the document formatting into a version that Aula can recognise.
2- Can I copy all text and images at once from my Word document and paste them into Aula?
You can copy and paste text from Word into Aula, but images copied alongside the text won’t paste into Aula. Instead, image placeholders will appear where the images were in the original document, making it easier to reinsert them in the right place after pasting.
3- What will happen with my font colour when I copy and paste from Word?
Any font colour copied and pasted from Word will be retained when pasted into Aula. Do note though that editing font colour within Aula will show the existing 7 supported colours. Please take extra care when choosing your font colour to copy from Word as some colours may not be accessible to users with visual impairments. We would recommend sticking to the 7 standard Aula colours, which are accessible.
4- Which text formatting elements are supported with copy and paste from Word?
Aula supports the following formatting elements when copying and pasting from MS Word: Headings (Level 1,2,3); Bold; Italic; Underline; Strikethrough; Lists (Level 1); Quotes; Inline Links; Hyperlinks; Paragraph line breaks; Font colour
5- Can I copy from the Word app on my mobile device and paste into the Aula mobile app with formatting retained?
You can copy and paste content into the Aula mobile app, but the formatting won’t be retained. If you need to keep formatting, we recommend copying from the Word app and pasting into Aula via the web app instead.
6- How do I stop comments from copying over to Aula?
In your Word document, go to Review > Comments > Delete and select Delete All Comments in Document before copying your content from the Word app.
7- If I copy and paste my whole Word document, not all formatting is retained. Why?
Some Microsoft Word elements aren’t supported in Aula. When Aula encounters unsupported items, it may treat the content as plain text.
If this happens, try copying and pasting smaller sections of your Word document to help preserve formatting throughout.
8- What happens to nested lists when I paste them into Aula?
Aula supports a flat list structure. Any nested lists will be converted into a single-level list when pasted into Aula.
9- I have an image surrounded by text on the same line. Why isn’t it copied, or showing as an image placeholder?
Images need to be copied and pasted separately into Aula. If an image appears as its own paragraph in Word, Aula can detect it and insert an image placeholder when you paste the text. If the image sits on the same line as text, Aula can’t detect it, so no placeholder will be added.
