This article will guide you on how to create ungraded assignments in Handin.
Set Grade Type
- Create a new Handin Assignment.
- Choose 'Free Form Grade' as the grade type. This allows you to enter anything in the grade field when grading submissions.
- When grading submissions, enter something like 'no grade' or 'ungraded' for all submissions. This will be displayed to the student when the grades are released along with the feedback.
Provide Feedback
Handin is great for feedback-focused formative assignments because it is enables and encourages conversation between the educator and student. This shifts the pedagogy from passive learning towards active learning and - crucially - collaboration.
Along with the traditional feedback field, Handin has a 'Handin: Assignment Conversation Feature' on every submission.
For ungraded, feedback-focused assignments, we recommend that you use the Conversation field rather than the feedback field.
Anything entered in the feedback field will be visible to the student when 'grades' are released, however they will not be able to respond directly.
The Conversation on the other hand is exactly what the name suggests. By entering your feedback in the conversation field, you are actively encouraging students to respond to your feedback, ask follow up questions and reflect on how they can improve their work.
Like all text boxes in Aula, both the feedback and conversation fields support rich media formats. You can for example embed a Loom video, make a voice recording or include images, videos and embedded links, if this is something that would be relevant for your particular subject / assignment.
Note
Comments made in the Conversation box cannot be deleted.
