Uploads in Aula and Handin
In Aula, you can upload attachments using the native text editor, which is available in multiple areas of the platform.
The file size limit for uploads made directly to Aula or Handin is 1GB per individual file. There is no limit on the number of files you can upload in a single action.
While the total size of all uploaded files can exceed 1GB, each individual file must remain under the 1GB limit. For example:
When submitting an assignment in Handin, a student can upload multiple files—such as a PDF, a video, and an image—as part of a single submission.
When creating a post in the Common Room, you can upload multiple videos (for example, three separate videos) in a single post.
Uploads in Turnitin
Turnitin allows uploads of up to 100MB per submission and only supports one file per submission. These limits are set by Turnitin and are outside of Aula’s control.
For more information, see Turnitin’s Help Centre.
Working Around the 1 GB Upload Limit
Depending on the file format and your specific use case, you may be able to split large files into smaller ones and upload them separately.
Alternatively, you can use cloud storage to host larger files externally.
If you choose to store your files elsewhere, you can add a link to Aula instead of uploading the entire file. In most cases, Aula will automatically embed these links, allowing content to be viewed directly within the platform.
An additional advantage of using external cloud storage is that you can control who can view and access the content using invites, passwords, or other access restrictions as needed.
Some common options include:
Microsoft OneDrive
Google Drive
Apple iCloud Drive
Your university’s own media storage solution
YouTube
Microsoft Stream
Zoom
Loom
