Quiz: Grade Quiz Submissions

It's possible to manually grade and automatically score quiz questions. In this article, we'll walk through how grading quizzes works in Aula.

Please note that Aula Support is unable to manually change grades.

Manually Grade a Quiz

All questions in an Aula Quiz can be manually graded. To manually grade quiz submissions, it is first necessary to set a maximum score. After you've set a maximum score, you can start manually grading a Quiz:

  1. Head to Journey > Assignments.
  2. Select the quiz you'd like to grade.
  3. Click on a student submission.
  4. Enter the scores according to the max score you had previously set for each question.
  5. Optional: Toggle on Add feedback on a per-question basis if you'd like to leave additional written feedback as well as a score.
  6. Scroll back up to the top of the page and click Save.

Auto-Scoring

Auto-scored grading works through the following 3 scoring methods:

  • Exact Match
    • The student must get the entire question correct to receive a mark. 
  • Partial Match Per Response
    • Partial scoring can be used in questions where the student may have to answer multiple-response questions therefore this is not available in all question types. Each response can be scored independently, however, each response is of equal value. 
  • Partial Match
    • Similar to the above, the student gets a partial score for each correct response to the question. The difference with Partial Match is that the value entered in the points box is the overall mark for the question.

Note

Some questions, such as Classification and Order List, also have additional scoring methods. However, not all question types can be auto-scored. Essay (including Math and Chemistry), Audio and Image Highlight questions cannot be auto-scored and need to be manually graded.

Enable Auto-scoring and Set Correct Answers

To automatically score questions in quiz submissions, you will need to set a maximum score, which happens during the quiz creation process (see: Quiz: Create a Quiz). After that you can move on to these steps to enable auto-scoring:

  1. When creating a question within a quiz item, scroll down to the Set correct answer(s) field.
  2. Scroll down and expand the More Options section.
  3. Check the Enable auto scoring box.
  4. In the Scoring type dropdown, select one of the following:
    • Exact match
    • Partial match per response
    • Partial match
  5. Scroll back up and set the correct answer. 
  6. Save your item.

Once you have set up auto-scoring when you initially set up your quiz, most of the work is already done! Once you click into a student's submission, you will see that the auto-scoring has already been automatically applied. 

Note

It is essential to set the correct answers while enabling auto scoring.

Add Feedback

You will also have the option to toggle on the Add feedback option to include written feedback on a per-question basis.

Penalty Scoring

Penalty scoring deducts a value from the student's score for each incorrect response on a question. Penalty scoring is available on all auto-scored question and can be enabled for a question: 

  1. In the question editor, scroll down and expand More options.
  2. Set a value in the Penalty point(s) field.
  3. Scroll back up and hit the Save Item button.

Penalty scoring can behave differently, depending on the scoring type used in the question:

  • Penalty Scoring with Exact Match
    • Exact match requires the student to select all correct response options in a question to receive the score, otherwise they will receive a score of 0.

  • Penalty Scoring with Partial Match per Response

    • Partial Match per Response will award a student marks for each correct answer they submit on the same question. The value of each correct answer will match the value entered in the Points field in the scoring section of the question editor.

  • Penalty Scoring with Partial Match

    • Partial Match will award the student marks for each correct answer they submit on the same Question. The value of each correct answer is calculated by taking the value entered in the Points field in the scoring section of the Question Editor, and dividing that value by the number of correct options on the Question.
