Quiz Glossary
To get the most out of Quizzes, there is some terminology that is helpful to get familiar with. To help with that, let's start with a few definitions:
Quiz – an individual test with an open and close date. It can be ungraded, graded manually, or graded automatically. Each quiz would normally consist of numerous individual Items.
Item – an individual task built from Questions and/or Features. Each Item can consist of numerous elements. Items are automatically saved in the Item bank, which means that they can be later used in other Quizzes. An Item might be used to:
- Combine related Questions;
- Combine a video/audio Feature with an associated Question; or
- Support the Question with rulers, protractors, calculators, etc.
Questions – there are 55 Question types available within Aula, including but not limited to: multiple choice, fill in the blanks, classify, highlight, match, etc. Questions can be manually or automatically scored.
Features – supporting materials and tools used to give context and assist with Questions. This includes shared passages, video, audio, and interactive math tools.
Create a Quiz
- Head to Journey > Assignments.
- Click Create Assignment and choose Quizzes from the dropdown menu.
- Add the following:
- Title
- Description
- Open Date
- Due Date (also choose whether to close the quiz on the due date)
- Grade Type
- Hide or show the assignment
- Confirm with Next.
- Click View Assignment to start editing the contents of your quiz.
At this point, you will find yourself in the quiz editor itself. From here you will have two options:
- Create Item – When you'd like to start creating your quiz Items from scratch.
- Add from Item bank – When you already have relevant Items available in your Item bank.
Please ensure your quiz is created correctly. Once the first submission to a quiz has been made, editing a quiz will cause errors in the student's grade. Therefore, we do not recommend editing a quiz after the first submission.

FAQs
Q: Can I add different variants of the same question?
A: Yes! Head here to learn more.
Q: Can I add automated feedback for each response that a student selects?
A: Yes! To do it, click on More options at the bottom of the question editing window, and scroll down to Distractors. The order of your distractors should match the order of the options at the top of the page. This is available for Multiple Choice, Cloze with drop down, Cloze with drag & drop, and Cloze with text questions.
Q: I can't seem to remove the last remaining element (Question/Feature) from my Item. Why?
A: It's not possible for Items to be empty. You may notice that only giving a new Item a title and exiting it, will make it disappear. When trying to remove the last element in an existing Item, it will persist once you click back into it. To remove the last obsolete element in an Item, you'll first need to add a new one.
