You may create sub-assignments that will only be visible to a chosen group of students. This feature can be particularly useful in two situations:
Granting assignment extensions to a specific student or group of students, with new deadline reflected in the platform.
Creating different variations of the same assignment for different sub-groups of students.

Add a New Extension to an Assignment
With this feature, you can grant extensions or set up variations of an assignment for one or multiple students. To set this up, follow these steps:
- Head to Journey > Assignments
- Open an assignment
- Click on New extension in the top right
From there, you will be prompted to:
-
- choose the name for your extension,
- choose students to be included in the extension,
- choose a description, open date, due date, and grades release date.
If you'd like to create an extension for one student only, you can also click on the hourglass symbol directly next to their name on the submission list. In the next steps, you will see the same prompts guiding you through the creation process, where you'll be able to add more students if needed.

Possible Errors
If one of the students chosen for the extension has already submitted work to the original assignment, you will need to navigate remove their submission or deselect them. Only then you'll be able to create an extension for this assignment.
Important note:
Once an assignment extension is created, please do not hide the "parent" assignment from students. This can create access issues for the students on the extension of the hidden assignment preventing them from being able to load the assignments page.
Convert an Existing Assignment into an Extension of Another Assignment
This option can only be used between assignments created within the same app, e.g. 2 Handin assignments or 2 Turnitin assignments.
- Head to Journey > Assignments
- Open an assignment
- Click on the two arrows icon next to the New extension button
From there, you will be prompted to:
-
- choose the name for your extension,
- choose the "parent" assignment,
- choose students to be included in the extension,
- choose a description, open date, due date, and grades release date.
Possible Errors

If a chosen student has submissions in both "parent" and "child" assignments, you will need to navigate to either of these assignments and remove one of this student's submissions. Alternatively, you can deselect the student. Only then you'll be able to convert an existing assignment into its extension.
Anonymous Assignment Extensions
It's now possible to create extensions for anonymous assignments. However, there are two limitations:
- It's not possible to create an extension for anonymous assignments with existing submissions.
- Once an assignment is extended, it's not possible to anonymise / de-anonymise it.
Student view
Students will see the name of your extension on the assignment block in the Assignments tab. They will also see the name of the extension / cohort after being redirected to the assignment itself.
FAQs
Q: I can't find the option to create an extension for a quiz or a group / anonymous assignment. Why?
A: It's not currently possible to create extensions for quizzes, group assignments, and some anonymous assignments, however we plan on including this option in a future release.
Q: I'm trying to convert an assignment into an extension of another assignment but I can't find it in the "Destination assignment" drop-down. Why?
A: It's likely that those assignments have been created using two different tools. It's only possible to convert an assignment into an extension of another assignment if they were both created within the same app (either in Handin or in Turnitin.)
Q: Can I move a student to an extension if they have already submitted their work (and their assignment has/hasn't been graded)?
A: Yes, regardless of whether their submission has been graded or not, you'll be able to add a student to an extension after deleting their original submission.
a. For Handin, you can delete a submission directly from the Submissions list in Aula.

b. For Turnitin, you can remove a submission after opening Turnitin's Assignment Inbox.
For more details on the difference between these two options, please check this Turnitin help article on Paper Deletions on Turnitin.
